The Real Junk Food Project – Woodfield’s weekly market stall

Feeding minds not bins with

Did you know that one third of all food that is produced gets thrown away? This waste costs a lot of money and damages our environment. More importantly, just a quarter of all the food we throw away would feed every single hungry person in the world.

Woodfield’s weekly market stall

Every Thursday from 2.30pm to 3.30pm you will have a chance to purchase some fresh food at our market stall which has been substantially reduced. Just by using this food Woodfield will be saving 8.4 tons of CO2e per year (or 114 giant pandas!)

Food safety

The Real Junk Food Project Doncaster has qualified professionals who assess the safety of all our food. All food delivered to school will be of good quality and safe to eat. Some of the food might not look perfect. Fruit or vegetables might be wonky, or quite ripe. You may also find products that are past their date. To understand why we have provided you with this food it is useful to explain a bit more about the 2 most common dates that are used on products:

  1. Use by: A use by date indicates that the producer of the food does not guarantee the safety of it after that date. Unless you are very knowledgeable you should not eat food past a use by date, and we will not provide these products to school
  2. Best before: Best before dates indicate a guarantee of maximum quality. After this date a biscuit might be slightly less crunchy, or a vegetable might look less perky. However this does not impact on their safety. Just because a product might be past their very best does not mean you shouldn’t eat it.

All dates aside, how you store your food is much more important to its freshness and safety. More information is provided by the Food Standards Agency:

When does it start?
